Well, what can I say about Fight Club? Or I guess the real question is, what am I even allowed to say about Fight Club, right? I actually put this movie off for years because its reputation as a boy movie for boys had me thinking I wouldn’t enjoy it. But, boy, was I wrong! Thanks to a random deep dive I decided to do into media referenced in Panic! at the Disco’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, I read one of Chuck Palahniuk’s other novels, Invisible Monsters, back in December. And let me tell you, I absolutely loved it! That experience completely flipped my opinion on watching Fight Club; instead of avoiding it, I became very excited about watching it for the first time.
Now… this movie has been out for 27 years now. And I managed to avoid spoilers about it for around 26 of them. Yep, within just one year of me finally deciding to watch it, I had THE twist of the film spoiled for me in a casual joke made in a Reddit comment. Such a bummer. Naturally, my viewing experience was affected by this. But as a movie viewer, I am old and wise and mature enough to not let that color my opinion on the film. (Of course I can’t ignore how legendary my first viewing might have been if I had no idea. God, it must have been amazing for those who got to experience it that way.)
In short, I loved it. It was such a good time. David Fincher + Chuck Palahniuk is a match made in heaven for me as I love the work of both creators. The campy absurdity of Fight Club is a perfect base for Fincher to go nuts with his expressive and fun filmmaking style. Yes, I wish I hadn’t had a key element of the plot spoiled for me prior to watching, but it was still cool to watch it all unfold. It was great all around, no notes!
Rating:📀 I loved this movie!
