[Nerd’s Pick]

Thanks to Nerd, I finally got to see Hedwig! It’s been on my list for a handful of years, and on a fateful Goblin Movie Night, we rented it and had a spectacular evening. I knew I would be in for a treat, just the way I knew I’d adore Rocky Horror before I ever saw it, but I was blown away by Hedwig, and for one main reason: this is a movie about love.
It’s also really smart and makes references to classic literature, mythology, and philosophy, particularly the Symposium myth that people used to be four-legged, four-armed, and two-faced before they were split in half by the gods. This concept, which Hedwig introduces in her song, “The Origin of Love” shines as the theme of the film, coming to a beautiful and artfully portrayed conclusion at the end.
The movie’s structure ping-pongs along Hedwig’s timeline and makes great use of its rocking musical numbers. To no one’s surprise, it’s full of queer characters and themes. This film is also full of style and is so much fun to watch. The acting is well-done, and the direction is very unique. All in all, I’d say it’s very artsy, smart, and just buckets of fun!
Rating: đź“€I loved this movie!
My best friends and I (known affectionately as Goblin House) have a regular movie night where we all sit down together and watch a movie one of us has chosen. Most of these reviews will come from a Goblin Movie Night, so they will be tagged with the nickname of the Goblin who picked the movie.
